Visualize....

The funny thing about all my research on minimalism, decluttering, morning rituals – all the articles I’ve found have led me to other topics for self-care/improvement. I feel like I’m becoming a new age, granoley person (which is not a bad thing at all.) I love granola….and Pinterest…but I digress.

One of the ideas that popped up frequently was that of positive thinking, which in turn leads to the idea of visualizing. Visualizing the life I would like to have, the positive outcomes I am hoping for, and generally believing that the universe wants nothing more than to give me everything I’m wishing for. There are a TON of articles out there on the subject and I’ve only read a small amount, but the idea is very intriguing. My best friend’s mother loved telling us to visualize. “You have to picture what you want and then you send it out to the universe,” she would say. She was also a fan of driving around packed parking lots saying “who’s saving my spot?” And every time a spot would open, and not just any spot. A spot right up front, prime real estate. So what? It was a parking spot, not the lottery. The point is she believed completely in the idea that the universe was going to provide her what she needed in that moment, and dam if that isn’t a powerful idea.

I’ve decided in this, my unintentional quest to (really) improve my life, I’m going to have to keep branching out in my way of thinking. If that means visualizing things I want for my life, then so be it. But, I think this has to be a two part process. It’s one thing to think about what I want in my life, but I need to also change my overall outlook on life in general. I can’t just say I would like to have a, b, & c, I also need to believe it can happen. That means striving to be more positive, removing as much negativity as I can. I should be hopeful about what could be, while at the same time being thankful for what already is. Instead of having my first thought be “Ugh, I hope they don’t hate what I’ve written,” it should be “Oh, I can’t wait to hear what they like about it!” Instead of thinking “I wish I was making money off of my writing,” I should be saying “I’m so thankful we have the jobs we do and are able to pay all of our bills.” This idea makes so much sense to me in the visualization process. Why would God/the Universe want to give me anything more, if I can’t be grateful for all that I have now?

A goal of each day is to find at least 5 things to be thankful for and write them down – concrete proof of all that is right. A new goal is to say thank you throughout the day, and not just for the easy things. The electric bill is a reminder that we have the wonderful conveniences of the modern world. A pile of laundry means I have clothes to wear, while dirty dishes point to all the food we have to eat. So many people in the world would love to have these “problems.”

My hope it that eventually saying “thank you” will become as natural as breathing. I know in this day and age commiserating with someone over bad stuff is such an easy habit to fall into. It’s more common for some reason to bemoan when we’re having a bad day as opposed to sharing enthusiasm for all the good in our day. I am so guilty of this – I don’t know why it’s such an easy trap, but I sincerely want to be better about it.

So I’ll start with this….. Thank you for reading and I hope you have an amazing day!

Give Thanks.......

 In honor of the Thanksgiving
holiday I thought I would take time to reflect on all of the things that I have to be thankful for. I'm always grateful for the really major things - plenty of food to eat, my health, and a roof over my head, but sometimes we need to focus on the small things as well. Some days we need to be reminded that it's the little things that can make life so special......

  • The wonder of cell phones - being able to talk to my Mom today (4 hours away) just to catch up for a minute.
  • Thankful for people who are always prepared - when I went to make the spaghetti for tonight's dinner, I realized that we were out. Someone (Hubby) had forgotten to inform someone else (Me) when they used the last box, but I digress. Thankfully Hubby was able to stop at his parent's on the way home to grab a box - one of the 9 that they apparently had on hand. Thank you!
  • Peanut Butter & Co. Dark Chocolate Dreams Peanut Butter - (sorry, not sure why the link isn't working.) Yes I know that I have given up cut back on sugar, but this stuff is pure heaven. One spoonful can erase an entire day of horrible.
  • A snuggling kitty....(or any pet). A couple of friends have lost pets this week, which makes me want to hug mine even more. Pets are family members, little people covered with fur and the most amazing friend you could ever have. If you have a pet, I hope you realize right now how lucky you are to have them.

  •  Traditions.....Yes we'll eat turkey and stuffing and way too many desserts. But one of the things I'm most excited (and thankful) for about Thanksgiving, is that Hubby and I will also go out to cut down our Christmas tree that same day. We wander out onto his uncle's property, scouting out the perfect tree (Okay, some years they've been Charlie Brown trees, but we love them just the same) and by Saturday we'll have it up, ready to be decorated. Speaking of traditions - we also have to have National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation playing in the background while we trim the tree. We like to quote from it, and often:
    • Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?
    • Don't throw me down, Clark. I'll try not to, Aunt Bethany...
    • You surprised to see us, Clark?
Oh, Eddie... If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now.
Oh and last but not least.......Days off - I'm thankful that the day after Thanksgiving I can sleep in, have coffee in bed, snuggle with a kitty and reflect on all that I have to be thankful for......

What little things are you thankful for this week?

      Happy Thanksgiving!!!

PS - Just an update to a previous blog - My MIL watched the cats while we were away this weekend and apparently one of my pumpkins found their way to the trash can. It's a sickness.....

Falling for.........

A few (short) months back, I wrote a post extolling the virtues of summer, my favorite time of year. Sadly, it's over and we have moved onto fall. Normally this is the time of year when I begin my rant regarding the weather and my sadness over summer disappearing. However, this is a new year, one in which I am focused more on things to be thankful for, and less on things to complain about. I need to find good things in the everyday, rather than living for one season.  So in honor of today, the official 1st, full day of fall, I'd like to point out some of the things I'm looking forward to with the change of season.

Fuzzy Sweaters and cozy boots

Amazing colors of the leave changing

Annual tradition of carving pumpkins with Hubby

Homemade applesauce, apple pies, apple anything.....

Adorable knee high socks

Big pots of soup, chili and stew

Mulled wine (YUM!)

Pumpkin, Apple and Wine, outing with our friends at Brown's Berry Patch, Becker Farms and Marjim Manor

Nights spent in front of the fireplace

See, there's a lot that I like about this season.......it's just that......well......I know what comes after......

So, what are you looking forward to???

The Little Things......

TGIF......I don't know about you, but this has been a long week. One of those that makes you say "What a week, thank God it's Friday......I've talked about being grateful and the idea of a gratitude journal in another blog post, but I thought for today I would share the items that would make my grateful list. Sometimes it's the little things.....
In spite of the havoc wreaked by Irene, I'm thankful to report that all of my friends and family who were affected came through it safe. Trees down, power our, some shingles blown loose, but all repairable. Things can be replaced. People can not.

My husband going for a walk with me. When Hubby and I were first dating we loved to go for long walks late at night. Something about the quiet and the dark that made us feel comfortable to open up and be completely honest with each other. We learned so much about each other during those walks. To this day, if something big is going on in our life, there is nothing like a walk to get us talking. By the end of the walk we may not have things completely figured out, but we both feel better.

Great neighbors - We have a group of neighbors who are very close and very supportive of each other. (I must point out that one couple doesn't officially live in the neighborhood but they are adopted neighbors, based on the amount of time we see them.) They all take turns doing things like mowing each others lawn, snow blowing sidewalks, taking in garbage cans, and mail. They feed our cats, give us veggies from their gardens, let us use their pool and have impromptu dinners. This week one of the neighbors is in the hospital fighting a bad case of pneumonia and will probably be there until next week. During tonight's impromptu dinner, I offered to cook something for the husband so he wouldn't have to worry about meals. This led to all of us discussing meals that would be brought over when his wife returns home so that neither one of them will need to worry about food. After dinner, the men all made their way to our house to help Hubby apply sealant to our newly cemented driveway. Many hands make light work is the saying.....I'm thankful for the many hands and for the caring of all of them. Thank you - Samir and Candi, Debbie and Burt, Bill and Denise. Come home soon Debbie!

And as usual the 2 who always make my list of things I'm thankful for......
What are you thankful for today?
